2021-22 NBA Conference Standings Predictions

It is already October 19th, and the NBA regular season starts today. TODAY. WHAT?!

It doesn’t feel quite real, but here we are. This will be a very interesting season due to many storylines whether it be the health and safety protocols in certain states, injuries, massive turnover, the Simmons situation, and much more.

Let’s dive into my regular-season standings predictions.

Western Conference

1. Phoenix SunsĀ

2. Utah Jazz

3. Los Angeles Lakers

4. Denver Nuggets

5. Dallas Mavericks

6. Golden State Warriors

7. Los Angeles Clippers

8. Portland Trail Blazers

9. Memphis Grizzlies

10. Sacramento Kings (my hot take)

11. San Antonio Spurs

12. Minnesota Timberwolves

13. New Orleans Pelicans

14. Houston Rockets

15. Oklahoma City Thunder

Injuries will play a major factor as Kawhi Leonard and Jamal Murray figure to miss either the majority, if not all, of the regular season. How will Klay Thompson look upon his return? There are just so many questions that need to be answered at the top and in the middle of the West.

Phoenix and Utah are going to be the top 2 seeds in my estimation, mainly due to two things; one being they are both good, the other being continuity and health. Entering the year with mostly the same rosters and without some of the health concerns some of the other teams have separates them from the regular season pack for me.

The Kings making the play-in tournament is my hottest take on here. They’ll need to get off to a hot start then add some wing depth before the trade deadline, but I think Fox’s leap to stardom continues. I love their guards. Barnes is good. Hield can shoot. Holmes is fun. They’ve got sneaky pieces, even if the roster construction is unbalanced.

Eastern ConferenceĀ

1. Milwaukee Bucks

2. Miami Heat

3. Brooklyn Nets

4. Atlanta Hawks

5. Philadelphia 76ers

6. Chicago Bulls

7. Boston Celtics

8. New York Knicks

9. Indiana Pacers

10. Toronto Raptors

11. Charlotte Hornets

12. Washington Wizards

13. Cleveland CavaliersĀ

14. Detroit Pistons

15. Orlando Magic

The top of the East is very heavy with 3 title contenders in my opinion… possibly 4 depending on how high you are on Atlanta’s young core taking another step forward. Brooklyn is third due to the murky Kyrie situation. Along with that, I don’t expect them to take the regular season all that seriously.

I really like Miami. Like, a lot. I think they can win the East outright. They look like a team that would be hell to match up with in the playoffs. It’s also weird because I like the Knicks, and what they did as far as playoff viability… I just think the East improved and there will be some regression + chemistry issues early on as they integrate their new backcourt.

The East is better than it’s been in quite some time.

I’m sure these will look wrong one way or another by the time the season ends, but these are always a fun exercise to take a stab at. One last note I’ll make is that the regular season will look a lot different than the 2022 NBA Playoffs due to health, short turnover, and many other factors.
